North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)

An unofficial clearinghouse concerning NAICS

The North American Industry Classification System is the new standard code system to describe business establishments and industries, replacing the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is scheduled to go into effect for reference year 1997 in Canada and the United States, and 1998 in Mexico. It was developed to provide a consistent framework for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of industrial statistics. Designed by the United States, Mexican, and Canadian Governments, NAICS has implications for economists, regulators, marketers, publishers, and anyone else who uses industry based data. The most obvious use of the the codes are in the 1997 Economic Census. Of the 1,170 NAICS codes, 358 are new industries, 390 are revised from SIC, and 422 can be compared to the older SIC codes.
