Issues of culture, health and sexuality are of growing
importance nationally and internationally. Nowhere is this
clearer than in relation to social welfare and public
health efforts to promote sexual and reproductive health.
Here, gender stereotypes, cultural expectations and social,
political and economic conditions impact significantly on
women's and men's reproductive decision making, body
integrity, and vulnerability to sexually transmitted
infections including HIV/AIDS.
Recent years have seen growing interest in an analysis of
sexual cultures and meanings, and their implications for
individual and community health. Of particular value has
been enquiry into sexual communication and negotiation, the
formation of sexual and health-related identities, and the
implications of these for sexual and reproductive life.
The 1980s and 1990s have also seen significant efforts to
institutionalise greater concern for an analysis of
cultural forms in health studies, gender studies, lesbian
and gay studies, and population research. Culture, Health &
Sexuality offers a leading international environment for
the publication of scholarly papers in the fields of
culture, health and sexuality.
