We have been sitting at Sing Sing for three years now. Like everything
else, it has its ups and downs, we have seen growth, we have seen
contraction. People, inmates and volunteers have come and gone. Our
lower profile efforts, the letter writing and book mailings continue.
News of the Sing Sing Zendo always carries a taste of the dramatic.
Many people are only aware of the Sing Sing Zendo and know little about
the correspondence practice. Our correspondence practice began when
inmates from the Sing Sing Zendo were transferred to other facilities.
We keep in touch with many of them and provide assistance in terms of
moral support and spiritual literature. Initially, we begged for
damaged Buddhist books from publishers to establish a library at Sing
Sing. Now we regularly provide literature to inmates in local, state
and federal facilities all over the country.

This publication represents our first effort toward providing a
networking tool for inmates involved in spiritual practice. In coming
issues, you will hear the voices of imprisoned practitioners, Buddhist
and otherwise. Gateway is dedicated to spirituality, not restricted to
just Zen practice by any means.

 In This Issue:

                     Uteki's View

                     Buddha's Birthday

                     Zen Karmics

                     Counting

                     Starting Zen Practice in Prison
