increase & diffusion; a Smithsonain Web Magazine

 Volume 1, September 1996.

increase & diffusion is a simple, semi-original idea: a free web magazine
aimed at capturing the breadth of the Smithsonian Institution. The
Smithsonian exists to serve and represent the people of the United States.
Our premise is that there is room to expand how it does so.

The Smithsonian's mission, "the increase and diffusion of knowledge,"
extends way beyond the walls of its 18 museums and the 140 million
artifacts within them. Perhaps its most noble pursuit is reaching out
into the world to understand the many ways people lead their lives,
celebrating the complexity of people and their communities. The place
often stumbles through the process, but at its best, the Smithsonian
inspires fascination with all the world has to offer. On a smaller scale,
i&d hopes to convey something similar.

Volume 1 includes six stories that scratch at the surface of the
Smithsonian's reach into the world. We are hopeful that people want to
read; so some stories were allowed to stretch out a ways. Though we intend
to be a monthly webmag, it may take five or six weeks to put out Volume 2.
We are still learning the ropes. But come back often to see how V1
develops - we'll post tweaks and updates within the life of each issue.
And we need the extra hits to justify ourselves.

The magazine is funded (put euphemistically) and published (so far!) by
the Smithsonian. We work here and hope to keep our ever-endangered jobs so
we will try to avoid doing anything stupid. But i&d will struggle mightily
to stay somewhere close to objective within its pages: focused on the
Smithsonian, but not blindly in love with it. Somewhere in there should be
room for decent journalism and occasional scholarship from Smithsonian
 staff. That's our hope anyway.

increase & diffusion won't hurl "new paradigms"about; there will be little
"hubris" in pixel or posture; and you can expect nearly zero zippy techno
stuff for starters. We have no patience for the first two and no money
for the last. We feel lucky to have audio links at all, so please be
patient with our "wave" files. Give us time to develop on the technical
front. Or better yet, just give us your money.
