Dysfunctions and Handicaps

A thorough knowledge of the relationships which can exist between different
realities which are Impairments, dysfunctions and handicaps, is a major
stake for the development of our societies.
However, in spite of abundant literature on this subject, this knowledge has
made little progress in the last 30 years. This stagnation can be put in
connection with factors related to the structuring of research and the
organization of the corresponding professional sectors.
The scientific, theoretical and practical problems, posed by the study of
the interactions between impairments, dysfunctions and handicaps, require
without doubt a multidisciplinary approach.
Nevertheless, in spite of an evolution marked by efforts towards
decompartmentalization, research remains organized mainly on a disciplinary
basis and the procedures of evaluation of researchers give more value to
fundamental research than to finalized research.
As a result, unlike other countries, France has few, if any, research units
specifically focused on ³disability studies². This choice of the scientific
authorities in our country, while it can be justified from an
epistemological point of view, has a certain number of consequences in the
organisation of the research field concerned.
The new journal named Interactions is thus mainly conceived as a
communication tool aiming at allowing effective communication between
researchers from different fields, coming from different organizations and
institutions but whose work is directly or indirectly related to the
questions covered by the journal.
Its aim is to become a reference tool, able to select those scientific
contributions which present a true elaboration and make a genuine
contribution to the development of knowledge in this area. It thus intends
to take part in the regulation of the scientific debate while offering, as
far as possible, a space which is distinct from that of the ideological and
political debate on the questions related to ³disabilities.²
With this intention, it will attempt to make knowledge accessible to
researchers from different fields, but also to professionals likely to use
them and to the users of the services concerned.
