The MIT Electronic Journal for Middle East Studies (MIT-EJMES) is a
multi-disciplinary academic journal focusing on the modern Middle East.
Founded and run primarily by young scholars, the journal is committed to
publishing scholarly writing on the modern Middle East--both
interdisciplinary work and work within the traditional boundaries of the
social sciences and humanities. Although MIT-EJMES especially encourages
submissions from graduate students, all authors may submit articles for
consideration.
Unlike traditional journals focusing on the Middle East, MIT-EJMES is
published on the internet, at http://web.mit.edu/cis/www/mitejmes/. As an
internet journal, we believe MIT-EJMES will be able to take advantage of the
benefits of computer communication to reach a wide and diverse audience of
Middle East observers and researchers and thus facilitate scholarly
communication amongst colleagues and across borders.
The MIT-EJMES editorial board is committed to non-partisanship, and makes
publication decisions based solely on the academic merit of submitted
articles. We consider clearly-articulated and informed positions to be vital
to constructive discussion on the complex and often contentious issues that
characterize the modern Middle East, defined as countries of the Arab region
and including Iran, Turkey, Israel and the Ottoman Empire.
MIT-EJMES is also looking for lively reviews of books and cultural events
that are understandable to those outside, as well as inside, academia. In
accordance with standard academic practice, articles submitted for
publication to MIT-EJMES are subject to a process of blind peer review.
Submissions of original essays from 500 to 9000 words will be considered for
publication. Examples of appropriate paper submissions are: papers based on
original research, analysis of archival and other primary sources, papers
applying theory to a pressing problem in the modern Middle East, articles
describing the intertwined histories and cultures of the region.
MIT-EJMES welcomes book reviews, photo essays and artwork, author responses
to reviews of their work to be included under the Authors Respond section,
and announcements of collective intellectual projects, submissions of
materials and short essays for reprinting in the Miscellany section.
