Pacific Discovery is a partial electronic version of the print magazine
published quarterly by the California Academy of Sciences. Though most
stories in the magazine are about scientific subjects, all are accessible
to the educated nonscientist.
Throughout its half century of award-winning publishing, Pacific Discovery
has focused on the wonders and delights of the natural world: the
evolution of and interaction among organisms great and small, the sliding
and colliding of continents, the births and deaths of stars, species, and
cultures. As threats to the natural world have intensified, the magazine's
focus has adjusted to encompass the causes and ramifications of
environmental degradation and the rapid decline in Earth's biological
