Mission Statement
Our goal is to foster scholarship at the nexus of human rights and
development issues through an on-line publication. Human rights and
development concerns are inextricably bound and more attention should be
placed upon the way in which they interrelate. The protection of basic
rights often cannot occur without changes in the social, political, or
economic infrastructure. Similarly, if development is not informed by a
concern for human rights and dignity, there may be terrible consequences.
The intersection of these issues is often quite troubled. The right to
development has been counterposed against other human rights and
environmental concerns. Some scholars have argued that the very language
of rights prevents thoughtful discourse about concept of community. Both
development and human rights scholarship tends to present Northern
conceptions about what it views as a Southern problem.
The Yale Human Rights and Development Law Journal (YHRDLJ) strives to
provide a broad range of perspectives on these issues in the hope of
advancing the discourse beyond its current boundaries and disagreements.
The internet allows us to reach out to a wide range of people, including
those who do not typically use printed journals. The YHRDLJ does not
represent any one ideological conception of human rights or development,
but rather aims to provide a forum for more thoughtful discussion of these
issues. The future of the global community depends on scholars and
policy-makers working together to create a world order with balance, in
which a true marriage of basic human dignity and social prosperity is
realized.
