The Centre for General Linguistics, Typology and Universals Research (ZAS)
is a university-independent research centre located in the federal state of
Berlin. Its objective is the investigation of natural language and its
manifestation in individual languages. Universals are properties that are
common to all languages; these can be said to be due to similarities in the
biological and cognitive make-up of humans, as well as to the similar role
that language plays within all human communities.
Typology is the documentation and classification of systematic differences
which indicate that the pressure to optimise - to which all languages are
subject - in order to satisfy the demands imposed by biological, cognitive
and communicative factors can lead to different solutions in different
languages.
ZAS is dedicated to the description and explanation of the structure of
natural language and the breadth of its variation. Within our numerous
projects, research is conducted by experts from all major areas of
linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and
pragmatics, as well as the areas of historical linguistics, Creole-studies,
and child language acquisition. Worthy of special mention is the phonetics
laboratory in which diverse studies investigating the physiology of language
production are conducted in collaboration with Berlin's leading medical
institute, the Charité.
